Fertiberia BM Puerto Sagunto ease through to the last 16

Toni AlegreFertiberia BM Puerto Sagunto won 26–35 tonight against Interstar Deporte Maristas Algemesí, in a match in which the home side held their own in the first half, but ultimately a superior Fertiberia in the second half secured passage to the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

In the opening minutes, Fertiberia took to the court with the clear objective of taking control of the match through strong defending and rapid counter-attacks. The red-and-whites soon moved ahead on the scoreboard (3–5), despite suffering the first suspension, which Maristas failed to take advantage of. Arguillas’ good performance prevented an even greater advantage for Fertiberia, whose lead was reduced to just one goal (5–6), prompting a time-out from Patxi Martí. From the 15th minute onwards, Fertiberia were not at their best, as Maristas turned the scoreline around; Bruixola’s suspension did not help the red-and-whites either. In the final minutes of the first half, Fertiberia had to roll up their sleeves and defend more intensely to neutralise the opponents’ attacks, going into the dressing rooms ahead (14–15).

Fertiberia came out in a higher gear and scored a 0–4 run, having started more sharply than the home side. Vicent Nogués was forced to stop the match with a time-out, unable to halt the red-and-white onslaught. As the minutes passed, Fertiberia became more comfortable on the court, playing their game and giving Maristas no opportunities, eventually establishing their biggest lead of eight goals (20–28). The difference in quality became increasingly evident on the court; a tenacious Maristas side in the first half could not maintain the pace set by Patxi Martí’s men. Ultimately, Fertiberia sealed their passage to the last 16 without too much difficulty, with a score of 26–35.

Fertiberia’s next fixture will be next Saturday, the 25th, against BM Villa de Aranda, from 18:30, in the eighth league matchday.
