The Municipal Sports Council has published the list of award winners for Sagunto’s 19th Sports Gala, which will take place on 21 February. Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto Handball are celebrating after securing two of the gala’s most important awards. The club will be named the best sporting organisation for the promotion achieved last June in the promotion phase held at the Ovni. Meanwhile, the best male local athlete will be the red-and-white player Óscar García, who, after achieving promotion with the club he has played for throughout his career, has reached the junior national team.
Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto Handball’s first team achieved a hugely significant milestone last season. Just one year after being relegated to the Silver Honour Division, they returned to ASOBAL, finishing second in the second tier and first in the promotion phase held at the Ovni. The red-and-whites gave their opponents no chance and comfortably won the matches played on Saturday and Sunday in our city. Sagunto Town Council’s Sports Department wanted to honour the organisation that strongly backed a return to the top tier of Spanish handball, always with Fertiberia’s support.
Óscar García achieved two of his greatest dreams in 2019. Firstly, he became an important player in the club’s first team, where he had grown up, and experienced his team’s promotion on court after witnessing it from the stands in 2009. He also became a regular in the Spanish Royal Handball Federation squads. After progressing through all the Hispanos youth categories, García is earning a place in the Spanish Junior team. Sagunto Town Council’s Sports Department has not overlooked the 19-year-old’s career and achievements, and he will be named the best male local athlete on 21 February.
Sagunto’s 19th Sports Gala will take place on Friday 21 February at 19:00 at Casal Jove. The event will recognise the best athletes of 2019 and will also address the values of sport, teamwork and the culture of effort demonstrated by all local athletes and clubs.
The other award winners include wrestler Marta Ojeda Navarro as best female athlete, and canoeist Jorge Cortijo. In the newcomer categories, the female award will go to inline hockey player Carla Morales and the male award to weightlifter Sergio Munuera. The award for sporting merit with functional diversity will go to athlete Cristian Pérez, while the award for promoting values through sport has been given to athlete Begoña García. The award for promoting the visibility of women’s sport will go to Biensa Club de Fútbol. In the category recognising sporting achievement, the award will go to former athlete Eduardo Alcaina Valero. Finally, the award for promoting sport has been given to journalist Álvaro Paricio.
