Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto lost 26-27 to Quabit BM Guadalajara in their first friendly match after the Christmas break. The Ovni had not seen its team lose since the visit of At. Madrid.
The match began with a very even game in the first ten minutes (4-4). Despite the initial parity, the visitors immediately settled into the match thanks to a five-goal run, making it 4-9 on the scoreboard. For this reason, Vicent Nogués called a timeout to halt Quabit's strong play and make some changes. The following minutes were characterised by poor attacking accuracy from both sides, with the red-and-whites unable to find the gaps needed to beat Gómez Lite. As a result, Fertiberia went into half-time five goals down, with the atmosphere a little flat after the Christmas break. They also felt the absence of their two regular centre-backs, Fernando Latorre and Mirko Milasevic, particularly in the first half.
After the break, the red-and-white team continued at an apathetic and disjointed pace, with notable problems in their combination play. From the 10-minute mark, the red-and-white goals came thanks to Rubén Ruiz's fine determination as he sought to break through the opposition defence. The final 15 minutes were highly thrilling as the Valencians reduced the deficit to 25-27 and the defence once again took centre stage. Ultimately, Vicent Nogués's side could not turn the score around and lost by just one goal (26-27).
Of note were Mateu Castellà's return after recovering from his long-term injury and the fantastic debut of the latest signing, “Chispi”, who scored 4 goals.
In short, Fertiberia are back after the Christmas holidays and will look to use these friendly matches to be ready for the start of the second half of the Liga Asobal season.
