2025-05-05Fertiberia Balonmano Puerto Sagunto and Matheus de Novais have reached an agreement to extend their relationship for the next two seasons, ensuring the player remains with the club until the end of the 2026-2027 season.
The Brazilian back is enjoying his first season with the club after arriving last summer from Bathco BM Torrelavega and Horneo EÓN Alicante. With the Cantabrian side, he played the final part of the Liga Plenitude Asobal season, scoring six goals in four matches, and also featured in the Copa de España, where they finished runners-up. Before joining Torrelavega, he scored 108 goals in 27 matches for the Alicante side in the Men’s División de Honor Plata.
His arrival in Spain dates back to 2018, when he joined Villa de Aranda, where he stayed until 2021. In the 2019-2020 season, he helped secure promotion to the Liga Plenitude Asobal, a feat he will now attempt to repeat with the red-and-whites in the promotion phase taking place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May. Subsequently, in 2020-2021, he scored as many as 160 goals in 32 matches in that division, in which the red-and-white club aims to establish itself in the short and medium term.
“We are very pleased to have renewed one of the competition’s most influential players. We were clear that renewing one of the squad’s most important players was crucial if we wanted to continue with an ambitious project like ours,” first-team coach Toni Malla explains regarding Matheus’s importance both in the division and in the team.
“He is a player who brings us a great deal of experience, professionalism at all times, commitment and, above all, human quality. It took very little for all the parties involved to reach an agreement, a gesture for which we are deeply grateful,” the Tortosa coach concludes regarding what Matheus contributes on and off the court and how the negotiations went.
This renewal reflects the player’s outstanding performance and commitment. After last Saturday’s match, the final home game of the regular season, a 31-27 victory over Trops Málaga, Matheus de Novais was chosen by the fans as the 2024-2025 MVP of the Puerto Sagunto squad.
This new renewal joins those already announced for head coach Toni Malla, under a two fixed-season plus one optional-season arrangement, and for Dani Martínez and Arnau Fernández, both until 2027, and David García, until 2026. As for new arrivals, the only signing confirmed to date is Alex Pozzer, who will also remain with the club until 2027.
Over the coming weeks, further renewals and new signings will be announced through the club’s website and social media.
