Trinidad Alfonso Foundation to support 39 clubs from the two highest divisions in the Valencian Community

Juan Roig will invest €1.4 million in this second edition of the Activate Teams programme to support organisations from seven different sports.

These teams will benefit from grants that will give them more resources to increase their sporting potential.

The Trinidad Alfonso Foundation continues to implement ways of contributing to the revival and recovery of the various agents that make up the Valencian Community’s sporting ecosystem. Just a few days ago, the second call for applications for the Activate Teams programme closed, with the aim of supporting clubs from the Valencian Community with teams competing in the first or second divisions of their respective sports.

This programme, which forms part of the global #EActivateSport project, involves a total of 39 different clubs in this edition, five more than last year. In total, Juan Roig will allocate €1.4 million annually from his personal wealth, pursuing the following objectives:

1. Prevent the disappearance of high-level clubs following the expected lack of sponsorships
2. Provide clubs with tools that enable them to secure more resources, with the aim of becoming economically sustainable over time.
3. Achieve representation for Valencian Community teams in the main national leagues.

The final grant allocated to each club was determined based on each club’s total budget and a series of variable parameters, such as the level of the league in which they compete, the number of youth athletes, the number of male and female athletes, the presence of Valencian athletes, and the acquisition of private sponsorships, among others. Eleven of these 39 clubs will compete in their sport’s top division this season.

The teams belong to seven sports: basketball, handball, volleyball, rugby, skating, hockey and water polo.

“The programme was launched a year ago with the intention of mitigating the impact of the severe economic crisis arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and preventing Valencian Community teams competing in the top two national divisions from losing competitive strength because of it, whether through the departure of their best players or the reduction in advertising and sponsorship income that may result from this crisis. However, our president, Juan Roig, did not want it to be a one-off and isolated form of support; he wanted to help build something more solid, which is why it was envisaged that this action would continue over time. We are very satisfied with this second edition because of the increase both in the number of clubs and in the number of Valencian teams in the elite of their respective sports. We hope to continue growing, listening to the clubs, and ensuring that these targeted grants are useful and help to continue building the Comunitat de l’esport we want,” explains Juan Miguel Gómez, director of the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation.
