Patxi Martí will be the coach of Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto 2013–2014

Patxi Martí, a 49-year-old Valencian, will lead the red-and-white club’s fourth Liga Asobal project after Vicent Nogués declined the offer of renewal on the same financial terms as at present. In an open letter to all sections of the club, Vicent Nogués stated that “I would have loved to continue at Puerto; it has been an honour to coach this team, but sometimes circumstances dictate matters. Last year I committed very strongly to coaching here, making a personal, professional and financial sacrifice. At the end of the season, when I spoke to the board, they told me they could not improve the terms. I respect the club’s policy, but under those conditions I could not continue, because coaching generated more expenses than income for me and became a burden.”

Vicent Nogués, in an open letter to all sections ofthe club, stated that “I would have loved to continue at Puerto; it has been an honour to coach this team, but sometimes circumstances dictate matters.

The red-and-white board, through its Vice-President of Communications, Carlos Argente, stated: “We deeply regret that Vicent will not continue with us and we understand his position, but the club’s financial situation, with the loss of sponsorships, does not allow us to offer a renewal in line with this season’s performance. This is the fate of this club: having to reinvent ourselves season after season because we have no financial cushion whatsoever.”

The new coach, Patxi Martí, is currently the Technical Director of the Valencian Handball Federation and has extensive experience in Liga Asobal, having coached the last Valencian project in the division, Vamasa Valencia, for several consecutive seasons. There he secured qualification for European competition, the EHF Cup, and became known for developing new talent in Valencian handball. Players such as Gedeón and Isaias Guardiola, Alfredo Sorrentino, Adrián Sifre, Angel Romero and the current red-and-white players David Bruixola, Javier Tarrasó and Angel Fernandez, among others, made their way into the top division under Patxi’s guidance. The captain of Fertiberia Puerto Sagunto, Rubén Ruiz, also had the opportunity to share a dressing room with the new coach, making his Liga Asobal debut under Martí at Balonmano Valencia.
