Alser BM Puerto Sagunto drew 26-26 against Maygar BM Antequera in captain Pachi Peg’s farewell match, which they approached with the aim of securing two points so as not to finish bottom of the table.
The visitors took an early 0-3 lead thanks to an accurate Espigol. However, the red-and-whites soon woke up, reducing the deficit to just one goal (4-5) under Latorre’s direction and thanks to their attacking efficiency. After fifteen minutes, Alser looked superior to their opponents and moved ahead (7-5), showing defensive solidity despite the numerous injuries in the squad. The Andalusians’ coach tried everything, pushing Bros forward to defend against Latorre, but it had no effect, as the red-and-whites were very secure in defence, allowing their attackers to play with greater composure. At half-time, the scoreboard showed 15-13 to the home side.
The second half began well for the red-and-whites, who took advantage of every attacking opportunity with goals from Muiña, Rubén Ruiz and Tarrasó. From the fifteenth minute onwards, goalkeeper Mijatovic took centre stage, saving several key chances for the home side and thereby reducing the deficit (21-20). The final minutes were thrilling. With the score tied at 25, Pachi Peg saved two clear chances for the Andalusians, prompting the crowd to pay tribute to him, but an Antequera goal in the final minutes brought back old ghosts. This time, however, Tarrasó managed to equalise, bringing the match to an end at 26-26.
The great tribute paid to Pachi Peg before the match by the club and the supporters who packed the Ovni, in the final Asobal match of the season, deserves special mention. In unison with the club, the crowd chanted “Puerto belongs in Asobal” and displayed a banner reading “we are leaving but we will return”.
Ultimately, it was a match that seemed destined to have a clear winner, but Antequera’s tough play eventually enabled them to snatch a point in their fight for survival. The next and final match will be played in Vigo on Saturday the 2nd at 18:30, with the aim of ending the season with a victory.
In terms of social matters, the third half continues on Tuesday, when the BM Puerto Sagunto Citizens’ Defence Platform will present the mayor with the approximately 7,000 signatures it has managed to collect in just one month in support of keeping handball at the elite level in BM Puerto Sagunto.
