A crucial moment for BM Puerto Sagunto

The other day we were moved when looking at some photos from 15 years ago in Lleida, celebrating promotion to the national first division, and at some videos from five years ago in Barakaldo, with the mayor, the team and yours truly in the shower, fully dressed and soaked, celebrating promotion to ASOBAL.

Moments of overwhelming joy at achieving an objective. And we have been at the top for five years.

Only six teams remain in ASOBAL from among those that were there when we arrived: Barcelona, Granollers, Rioja, León, Aragón and Cuenca, three of them in insolvency proceedings. The others are no longer there.

When discouragement sometimes gets the better of us, or things do not turn out as we thought and are worse than they might have been, it is healthy to look back, see things in perspective, appreciate what we have achieved through such effort, take legitimate pride in being part of these successes and feel the responsibility of leaving this legacy to those who come after us.

It is also worth appreciating what has brought us this far and recognising what is fundamental to maintaining and trying to improve what we have achieved.

I believe there are several essential elements if our team is to remain among the elite:

- The firm commitment of the majority of our neighbours, who feel represented by this team, rejoice in its victories and share its defeats, want this to continue and convey that wish to our representatives on the Town Council.

- A broad, capable and cohesive Board of Directors, united behind the undeniable objective of keeping the team among the elite, together with a veritable army of supporters, volunteers, coaches, delegates, journalists and so on.

- Firm, loyal and unconditional support from the Town Council's governing team and its mayor.

The combination of these three factors has brought us this far, and is essential for us to remain here and reach greater heights.

I am convinced that we have had the support of the current governing team and the mayor. They have helped us and backed a top-level sporting project that brings together the aspirations of local people, represents them and serves as an ambassador to the rest of Spain and the world, helping people to place us on the map and making us a vehicle for attracting visitors and investment projects that will help us prosper, through the positive image we project of our municipality.

All the political groups we have met have stated that they will continue to support this project.

From next Sunday, they will have the opportunity to demonstrate the reality of this commitment, whether in government or in opposition.

We will demand this of them.
