Mauro Alonso, a handball legend in Puerto Sagunto, dies
Yesterday, Sunday, a handball legend in Puerto Sagunto passed away. Mauro Alonso was everything to the club: a player from its founding era, coach during Altos Hornos’s greatest years, driving force behind the club’s re-foundation in 1970 and coach of BM Puerto Sagunto during several periods. Handball in our city will always be indebted to Mauro Alonso. It is impossible to understand what we are without a man like him, who set aside many hours of his personal and family life for what had always been his great passion: handball and the Club.

His final appearance on the red-and-white bench was on 15 December 2001, when, true to form, he managed the club’s veterans’ team against the Spanish national veterans’ team on the occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary. We also had the pleasure of welcoming him to a Liga Asobal match, where he enjoyed a top-flight match with the red-and-whites for the last time.

Last year, the city recognised his career, and at the Sports Gala held at the emblematic Teatro de Begoña, he collected the Sports Career Award from Mayor Alfredo Castelló, in what was his final public event connected with sport.

Without a doubt, we have lost one of the greatest figures in Puerto Sagunto handball. His teachings and his dedication to the club over so many years leave those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him a legacy that will live on forever in red-and-white hearts. Puerto Sagunto handball’s DNA contains many drops of this man’s sweat, blood and tears.

Rest in peace, Mauro Alonso Figuero.

Mauro Alonso’s body is at the Camp de Morvedre Funeral Parlour, beside the Minife, and the mass in his honour will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11 in the morning in the chapel of the funeral parlour.
